Grants and Awards

Grants and awards in psychology typically involve research--grants are given to help you do research, and awards are given after research completion to reward a job well done.

Grants

Support available from Ball State and organizations at Ball State:

TheĀ Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs provides information on financial support of student research. Contact this office for further information about these grants:

  • Undergraduate Research Grants ($300) cover supplies and expenses of research projects
  • Sigma Xi, a scientific society with a chapter at Ball State, has a research support grant contest each year. They offer both undergraduate and graduate awards.

Note: It is unlikely that undergraduates can compete for national-level external grants. However, for information see the Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs.

Awards

  • N. John Castellan Student Paper Award: The Society for Computers in Psychology holds an annual competition for students about computers and psychology. All good papers are accepted for presentation at the annual meeting. The award winner receives a cash award and a one-year subscription to Behavior Research Methods, Instruments, and Computers.
  • Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, regularly sponsors undergraduate and graduate research award competitions; several are listed below, and more information about them and others can be found on the Psi Chi awards web site. Cash awards of $150 are given to student authors of the best research papers presented at the Psi Chi sessions of regional conventions. Psi Chi Awards

  • J. P. Guilford Undergraduate Research Awards: Competition includes cash awards of $100 to $500. Deadline: May 15.
  • Allyn & Bacon Psychology Awards: Open to all undergraduate Psi Chi members. Cash awards range from $200 to $500. Deadline: April 1.
  • American Psychological Association (APA) Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award: All psychology graduate students are eligible for this award. Awards include travel expenses to the APA/Psi Chi National Convention, a three-year subscription to APA Journal, and two engraved trophies. Deadline: March 23.
  • Regional Research Awards: All undergraduate and graduate Psi Chi members are eligible.
