What is AKD?
AKD is an honor society that provides service, research, and social opportunities for sociology students. You can learn more about the history of Alpha Kappa Delta at the United Chapters of AKD.
Who can join AKD?
AKD is an organization for juniors and seniors who carry at least a 3.3 GPA in overall course work and a 3.0 in sociology courses taken. Graduate students are also eligible for membership in AKD. Members must have taken at least four sociology courses.
How do I apply for AKD membership?
Print out the AKD application, complete it, and take it to NQ 222, the Department of Sociology's main office, with a check for $56 made out to "Ball State University--AKD."
What AKD activities are planned for the next few months?

What are some typical AKD social activities?
In the past year, AKD hosted a spring ceremony welcoming new initiates and congratulating graduating seniors. AKD members also held a book sale and designed and sold T-shirts to raise funds for their activities. Meetings were held at local restaurants, such as Scotty's and Greek's.
What community activities are AKD members involved in?
AKD members have opportunities to participate in civic activities throughout the year. Last year, students volunteered at a local food bank and also donated a portion of their fundraising activities to a local women's shelter.
What professional activities are AKD members involved with?
AKD members are encouraged to participate in professional and research opportunities. For example, AKD members have attended the meetings of the North Central Sociological Association.
What are the initiation fees for joining AKD?
To join, students pay a one-time fee of $48. This fee covers the cost of honor cords worn during graduation, the initiation certificate students receive when officially welcomed into the honor society, a one-year subscription to the academic journal Sociological Inquiry which is received after activation card is submitted, and lifetime membership in AKD.
To qualify for memberships you must meet the following requirements:
- Be an officially declared major or minor in sociology
- Be at least a junior (63 credits or more)
- Have accumulated an overall grade point average of 3.3
- Have a 3.0 grade point average in sociology courses taken
- Complete at least four regular courses in sociology prior to initiation
- Complete one semester of graduate studies in sociology
- Have a graduate grade point average of 3.0 or better
- Continue in the graduate program beyond initiation
