Two department-sponsored study councils exist to improve education in member schools. The councils strive to accomplish this goal by studying educational issues, diffusing effective educational practices, and promoting active participation in activities related to improving student achievement.

Both councils are governed by an elected executive committee that consists of a president, past president, president-elect, treasurer, and two executive committee members.
