Student Teaching Opportunities

Student teaching at Ball State University is a semester-long experience that permits teacher candidates to demonstrate the integration of knowledge, performance, and dispositions learned in the professional education sequence to professional classroom settings. The purpose of student teaching is to provide a planned, supervised learning experience in schools where the teacher candidate practices the application of pedagogical content knowledge to demonstrate teaching ability under direct supervision by school and university personnel. While student teaching presents learning opportunities, it also embodies the added responsibility of teaching and advising K-12 students.

Most student teaching placements take place in the state. Ball State University requires that student teachers choose from specified Indiana counties within a 75-mile radius of Muncie. Special opportunities are available in Professional Development Schools and Partnership Schools.

Student teachers may consider the Cultural Immersion Program, which is in collaboration with Indiana University. For more information, contact Laura Stachowski.

Another opportunity is the Special Collaboration Program with Aldine Independent School District in Houston Texas.

International Programs give students the opportunity to explore intercultural issues outside the usual campus setting. Through an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense Schools, Ball State University elementary and secondary education majors may consider student teaching in Ramstein, Germany. Currently, student teachers are assigned to Ramstein Elementary, Intermediate, Middle and High School, part of DoDDS-Europe Kaiserslautern District.

All schools are located on a United States Air Force base located in the Rhine and Mosul Valley region. Although the schools are located in Germany, student teachers teach American children who are the dependents of military and civilian personnel stationed abroad.
