Indiana Teaching Licenses

All Ball State professional education programs are designed to meet the Office of Educator Licensing and Development license framework. The following is a description of the different licenses offered through the state of Indiana.

Initial Practitioner License
This license is a renewable two-year license issued to a teacher who has successfully completed an approved teacher education program. The following items are required for this license:

  • Proof of successful completion of a preparation program.
  • Proof of successful completion of written examinations (Praxis II).
  • Completed application form approved by the Office of Educator Licensing and Development (OELD).
  • A licensure fee.
  • Proof of current valid CPR certification including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training and proof of suicide prevention training.

Your will need to work through the licensing advisor at Ball State University to obtain the initial practitioner license.

In the situation where the teacher does not obtain a position during which completion of the assessment program is possible, this license may be renewed twice for a total of six (6) years without additional continuing education requirements.

Proficient Practitioner License
This license is a renewable five-year license issued to a teacher who has successfully completed a two-year Beginning Teacher Residency Program. The following items are required for this license:

  • The building principal determines the requirements for the Beginning Teacher Residency Program. It is recommended that you meet with your building principal immediately after you secure your first teaching position to discuss the requirements of this program. The principal determines whether or not a mentor will be assigned to work with you during your first two-years. A portfolio is no longer required.
  • The teacher's initial license.
  • A completed application in a format approved by the board.
  • A license fee.
  • Beginning July 1, 2012, applicants will need to provide proof of current valid CPR certification including AED training and proof of suicide prevention training.
  • To renew a proficient practitioner license, the teacher will need to complete a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) that contains 90 points. The building principal will work with you to determine the appropriate renewal activities and approve your PGP. Upon receipt of your proficient practitioner license, it is recommended that you schedule a meeting with your building principal to establish a PGP. Applicants may still complete six (6) semester hours of college course work as verified by the building principal or the licensing advisor. The licensing advisor no longer approves college course work in advance for renewal.

  • A license fee.
  • Beginning July 1, 2012, applicants will need to provide proof of current valid CPR certification including AED training and proof of suicide prevention training.
