Advising by Faculty
Ball State University provides Advising Resource Centers on campus which specialize in specific academic programs. Students are assigned to an advising center based on the student's classification and major. Students may request a Degree Analysis Progress Report (DAPR) on theĀ Academic Advising site. The assigned advisor's name, office location and telephone number are listed at the end of each DAPR. Students may also receive the advisor's name by requesting this information from the Advising Center.
As freshman, all students are part of the University College Advising Center (NQ 323) regardless of their intended or declared major. Each incoming student is given an advising handbook which includes general advising information. In addition, each student is assigned an advisor who is specialist in working with freshman students as they begin their college years.
When an Elementary Education major has been classified as a sophomore, he/she is reassigned to the University Advising Resource. From sophomore status through graduation, the student's records are maintained in the same advising center. Advising information, course scheduling books, forms, and DAPRs are available in the Advising Resource Center located at TC 915.
Elementary Education students are assigned to department faculty members who serve as advisors. Students usually work with a single faculty advisor during the second and third year of teacher education. When the student acquires 95 credit hours, a senior faculty advisor is assigned to assist the student with the final preparation for graduation.
D.A.P.R. Exceptions
The official faculty advisor may assist students in the rare situation of substituting one University course for a required course in the Department program. A procedure has been established which protects the liability of the assigned faculty advisor and at the same time serve the students.
- The D.A.P.R. Exception Form is completed, dated, and signed by the faculty advisor.
- The completed form is submitted to the Department's primary advisor.
- Two copies of the approved form will be returned to the faculty advisor within 48 hours. One copy is to be given to the student and one copy remains in the faculty advisor's file. The primary advisor will notify the Advising Center to make the change on the student's records. New information should appear on the student's D.A.P.R. in about one week.
Faculty members who are not the official faculty advisor are urged to avoid helping a student out by submitting exception forms for students enrolled in a class. Instead, students should be referred to their faculty advisor or the Department's primary advisor.
