Decision Points

As you progress through the special education program, you will need to meet certain requirements to remain in the program and to be eligible for graduation and licensing. These requirements may change, so check with your advisor to make sure you are on track for graduation.

Decision Point 1: Identification with the profession of special education (SPCED 201)

  • Earned grade of C or better in SPCED 201
  • Passed disposition assessment in SPCED 201
  • Demonstrated knowledge of INTASC, IPSB, and ISTE standards
  • Completed Professional Growth Plan component of SPCED 201
  • Submitted digital portfolio

Decision Point 2: Admission to the special education teacher education program (SPCED 202)

  • Earned grade C or better in SPCED 202, 266, and in COMM 210
  • Passed disposition assessment in SPCED 202
  • Earned a minimum 45 credit hours with an overall GPA of at least 2.5
  • Passed Praxis I
  • Digital portfolio requirements met
  • Completed Professional Growth Plan Phase 1
  • Maintained clearance from the Office of Student Affairs
  • Completed and had approved an application for admission to the professional education program of the Department of Special Education

Decision Point 3: Admission to student teaching in special education (SPCED 361)

  • Passed university Writing Competency Examination
  • Earned grade of C or better in SPCED 361 Advanced Practicum
  • Passed disposition assessment in SPCED 361 and 376
  • Earned grades of C or better in 300- and 400-level professional education courses
  • Earned a minimum 93 credit hours with an overall GPA of at least 2.5
  • Maintained a GPA of at least 2.5 in professional education courses and content area courses
  • Digital portfolio requirements met in student teaching interview
  • Completed Professional Growth Plan Phase 2
  • Maintained clearance from the Office of Student Affairs
  • Completed and had approved an application for student teaching

Decision Point 4: Recommendation for graduation (student teaching)

  • Earned credit in student teaching
  • Completed all requirements for graduation with an overall GPA of 2.5
  • Passed disposition assessment in student teaching
  • Maintained a GPA of at least 2.5 in professional education courses and 2.5 in all SPCED courses
  • Met ISTE standards at student teaching/internship level
  • Digital portfolio requirements met
  • Passed Showcase Portfolio
  • Completed Professional Growth Plan Phase 3
  • Passed Praxis II in special education specialty area(s)
  • Maintained clearance from the Office of Student Affairs
