In U.S. News & World Report's 2012 Top Online Education Programs rankings, Ball State online graduate programs in education (teacher and administrator preparation) were ranked 17th in student services and technology. This inaugural edition of online program rankings was released January 10, 2012.

The student services and technology category was based on criteria such as 24/7 tech support, help for students to learn in their own way and on their own time, career placement assistance, live tutoring, smartphone apps, and live streaming video. U.S. News surveyed 1,053 regionally accredited institutions and determined that 161 institutions offered online education degree programs and were able to provide data for at least a full academic year.
