Rules and Requirements

Rules and Requirements for Applying 

  • Complete a pre-telecommunications core of five courses earning at least a C (2.0) in each course and an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 for all pre-TCOM courses.
  • Demonstrate a competency in language usage, grammar, and computer skills.
  • Complete a departmental application and participate in a departmental orientation session.
  • Majors cannot choose more than one option in the department, and they’re not eligible to select any of the minors offered by the department.

Rules and Requirements for Majors and Minors

  • Must earn a C (2.0) or above in all required courses and a 2.5 overall GPA in all required courses (pre-TCOM and option, including option classes outside of the department).
  • All TCOM majors must complete four semesters or the equivalent in one modern or classical language, while TCOM minors need two semesters. Film minors have no departmental language requirement but are encouraged to take at least two semesters of French. You may be eligible to earn a portion of your language credit by successfully completing an exam. Contact the Department of Modern Languages and Classics for more information.
  • TCOM option courses are generally only open to approved departmental majors and minors and pre-TCOM courses are generally only open to approved pre-TCOM students.
  • All 300- and 400-level TCOM courses must be completed at Ball State, except for TCOM 330 Beginning Audio Production and TCOM 332 Beginning Video Production, for which transfer credits are accepted.
  • No more than 12 hours of transfer credits are accepted in the major and no more than 9 in any of the minors offered.
