Equipment and Facilities

Ball State has digital cameras, digital audio recording, digital video, lighting kits and accessories, and more. And guess who gets to use them? Anybody! That’s right. We offer access to high-tech, state-of-the-art, and in many cases high-definition equipment and facilities to all students—although telecommunications’ classes that rely upon this equipment get priority—anyone can use them, even as a freshman. The premier equipment and labs are housed in the Ball Communication Building and the David Letterman Communication and Media Building.

Interested but not sure where to start? As a major or minor, your telecommunications (TCOM) classes will give you a foundation in both the discipline and the equipment. Your professors will focus on the content—the story you want to tell—and there are workshops on how to develop your skills with specific equipment or software available in the studios.

Professors say that the students who excel move beyond the basics because they have a passion for it. Motivation is the key. You gotta have passion, but you don’t have to be Steven Spielberg. In fact many students arrive here without ever having touched professional grade equipment such as the Sony PD-150 camcorder. So if you have experience, great; if not, just as great. We’ll get you started. The rest is up to you.
