Telecommunications

Expert, Experienced Faculty

Having practiced what they teach, our faculty members are seasoned professionals in their fields. And they continue to be actively engaged in their fields through research, ongoing use of their skills and expertise in a professional capacity, and interaction and collaboration with other professionals and our students. Who better to teach you about telecommunications than our expert, experienced faculty? Check out their accomplished pasts and a few of their current feats:

Phil Bremen—as a correspondent for NBC News, covered stories on five continents, including war zones in Iraq, Iran, and elsewhere in the Middle East. He won multiple Emmy Awards as a local TV anchor and reporter. As press secretary for Indiana’s late governor, Frank O’Bannon, Bremen experienced firsthand what it’s like to help shape public policy rather than report it, as well as answer the questions rather than ask them. Since joining Ball State’s telecommunications faculty in 2001, Bremen has tried to impress students with the principles of thoroughness, accuracy, and fairness in reporting.

Jim Needham—managed public television station WIPB-TV and created and produced painting series—The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross—now distributed throughout the United States and in 25 other countries.

Alan Richardson—began his career as a writer/producer/director in educational radio. Later, he became a consultant for cable television systems and then moved into the field of corporate media where he was the first academician elected president of the International Television Association-International. He also wrote the current franchise agreement between Muncie and Comcast cable and chaired the city’s cable commission.

Wes Gehring—as a publisher is a national authority on comedy including a recent California trip for an extensive interview on director Leo McCarey. Currently, he's finishing his 27th book.

Rich Swingley—telecommunications manager with ABC Sports since 1992. He has been a producer for the Ball State University Teleplex for 21 years.

Nancy Carlson—spent five years in the radio industry in which she last served as sales manager for WMDH in New Castle, Indiana. Documentary producer of “Gene Stratton-Porter: Voice of the Limberlost” and Ed Ball’s “Century,” she is currently conducting a federally funded documentary on the National Road that is scheduled to air in 2009 on public television.

John Dailey—specializes in interactive media design. He has been a higher education since 1991 and has won numerous awards for personal photography and interactive design work with students.
