Ball State University defines immersive learning as experiences that meld content, skills, societal need, and student interests. Immersive learning in TCOM involves a number of programs, but all immersive experiences include the following characteristics:
- They involve a team of students and often are interdisciplinary.
- They are student-driven but guided by a faculty member.
- They result in tangible outcomes or products.
- They carry academic credit.
Examples of TCOM-based immersive experiences include NewsLink Indiana, SportsLink, and the annual Summer HD Movie project. Experiences administered by other departments, but which often involve TCOM students, include programs at the Virginia B. Ball Center for Inquiry and the Building Better Communities Fellows program.
TCOM students may earn up to 6 credits in each of two immersion courses, TCOM 397 and TCOM 497. The department does not routinely approve proxy credit for its courses; that is, it does not permit involvement in an immersive experience to replace credit in an existing course. Students planning to participate in an immersive experience should review the immersion policies of the Department of Telecommunications.
