Susan Koper is an artist, performer, educator and choreographer. Originally from New Jersey, Koper now lives in Muncie, Indiana where she is an instructor of dance at Ball State University. She currently teaches ballet, modern/contemporary dance, conditioning and an online dance history class in the Department of Theatre and Dance. Susan has also set numerous works on the department’s student dance company, Ball State Dance Theatre, and guides many of the majors in their own choreographic pursuits in the Junior and Senior Choreography Projects.
Koper’s early career included dancing professionally with Empire State Ballet in Buffalo, New York and working with Dance Theatre North, a modern dance company based in Homer, Alaska. Since 2010, Susan has been involved with the dance theatre collaborative z3movement project, performing in festivals throughout the country including the DUMBO Dance Festival (NYC), CoolNY Dance Festival (NYC), Harvest Contemporary Dance Festival (Chicago), and the Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival (Michigan), among others.
As a choreographer, Susan is captivated with the process of choreography and is interested in making work that moves and informs those who experience it. Therefore, in an effort to bring her own unique, personal and thoughtful artistic voice to a wider audience, she has been performing in her own works as a solo artist in festivals in New York and Michigan. More recently, Susan also formed the dance ensemble skdancers as a means to show group pieces in other areas of the country. The company will be performing her most recent work at the 2013 DUMBO Dance Festival in New York City.
Koper has trained extensively throughout her career with many well-known artists including Alonzo King, Bill Evans, Brenda Daniels, Ford Evans, Anna Marie Forsythe, Jesse Zarritt and Jeffrey Bullock. Susan received her BA in American studies from the University of Notre Dame and her MFA in dance on partial fellowship from Hollins University/American Dance Festival. She is also a past recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission.
Susan’s professional affiliations include membership in the Society of Dance History Scholars and she recently presented her research on Ruth Page at the 2012 American Dance Festival while completing her MFA. Koper is also a featured graduate of the HU/ADF program.
