Writing and Tutoring Fequently Asked Questions

What types of papers do writing tutors work with?
Tutors work with any written assignment for any class - English compositions, lab reports in science classes, research papers, case summaries, abstracts. Tutors also help with other writing tasks such as application letters, resumes and creative writing.

Are the writing tutors English majors?
Some are; some are not. Most of our tutors hold majors other than English because most of the writing you do during your undergraduate career is in classes other than English 103 and 104. All tutors must demonstrate strong writing skills and other academic qualities before they are hired. Writing tutors also complete continuous training to help them become even more skilled at peer tutoring.

Are tutors available for non-Core Curriculum classes as well as upper level classes?
Yes and no; if one of our tutors has taken a class they may be able to tutor that class. 

I tried working with a tutor, but I didn't feel like he helped me. What do I do now?
Talk to us. One-on-one teaching is not easy, and not all tutors will be able to work well with all clients. Think about your classroom teachers - some of them you "click with" right away; with others, you can't seem to establish any rapport no matter how hard each of you tries. If your sessions with a tutor are disappointing or not what you expected, ask to speak to one of the writing desk supervisors. We'll find a tutor who will work with you.

Should I have a completed paper with me when I ask for help?
Actually, we prefer to work with you during all phases of your writing process - from thinking to drafting to revising. Many writers find that talking through their ideas with a tutor helps them to focus and refine their approach to the assignment before they even begin setting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Of course, we're happy to work with any draft of a paper as well - please remember to allow enough time for the tutor to work with you in the most effective way.

Will a tutor proofread my paper?
No and yes. A writing tutor is not an editor; she will not take your paper, correct it, and return it to you. Your writing is yours; to have someone else change it in hopes of a better grade is unethical. However, your tutor will collaborate with you to improve your writing by explaining to you what needs to be improved and the ways you may accomplish that improvement. Keep in mind that most writers believe their papers' grammar/spelling/mechanics problems are the most serious trouble spots in the writing. However, many writers need to understand their papers may have problems with organization, development, or coherence which weaken the writing far more seriously than misspelled words or comma splices.
