Gifted and Talented (High Abilities) Education Certificate or License

Neumeister
Veteran online professor Kristie Speirs Neumeister has written a textbook that engages students in her favorite subject—gifted and talented education. Read her story.

To shape the minds of our schools’ brightest students, you must be able to recognize gifted and talented students and design appropriate curricula for their talent development.

Our high ability license/certificate will provide you with the opportunity to increase your expertise in the characteristics of gifted students and to design instructional programs and services to suit their needs, including:

  • the identification of gifted students
  • the evaluation of students and programs
  • the design of appropriate curricula for talent development
  • the social and emotional needs of gifted students

You will be learning from Ball State professors who have many years and a wide variety of experiences in education for high-ability students. In fact, Ball State is home to the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, Indiana's only public residential high school for gifted and talented students. The academy was listed in the top 6 percent of public high schools in the United States in a 2010 Newsweek analysis.

If you are an Indiana teacher, this program will allow you to earn a gifted and talented license. If you are from another state, you will earn a gifted and talented certificate.

Accelerated Format
You can take classes leading to the gifted and talented license/certificate in an accelerated, online format that features 8-week classes and the ability to finish in about nine months. Learn more about our accelerated graduate-level programs.
