The human body is a marvelously complex machine, and we’re in the driver’s seat—researching the bounds of human performance, exploring the mind-body connection, and championing the latest sports medicine techniques.
A leader in professional preparation, scientific inquiry, and applied technology, the School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science (SPESES) will provide you with an exceptional educational experience that incorporates intimate classroom instruction with scholarly outreach and real-word application.
Our Comprehensive Perspective
SPESES is one of six academic units within the College of Applied Sciences and Technology. We offer five undergraduate programs of study:
Our minors include adapted physical activity, aquatics, and sports medicine.
At the master's level, we offer:
A PhD in human bioenergetics is offered in the Human Performance Laboratory.
Real-World Applications
Our students don’t sit in stuffy classrooms. They contribute to the scholarly advancement of academic disciplines through practicums and research and serve the community through internships and student teaching. Ball State’s Laboratory and activity spaces allow students to put in-class knowledge to practice alongside renowned faculty.
We engage in exercise testing, metabolic measurement, and biomechanical analysis in our 20,000-square-foot Human Performance Laboratory—which has received national recognition for its research with NASA, Olympic athletes, and nutritional supplementation.
Our Teacher Education Lab and Exercise Science Lab expose students to pioneering equipment and technology.
A Sense of Community
Although our research interests vary, SPESES is a strong community of faculty, students, alumni, and friends who support each other in the classroom and beyond. Students are encouraged to participate in the Physical Education Student Association, which fosters professional partnerships and social outings such as rock climbing trips and bike rides along the Cardinal Greenway. Each discipline supports program-specific communities to connect student with peers, faculty advisors, and professional organizations.
We welcome our alumni, retirees, and friends to continue to build their relationship with SPESES. Your expertise and support provides students with the confidence and connections to exceed within the program and beyond. Whether you share your professional experiences with a class, establish a scholarship or facilitate a partnership—our department is eager to connect you with students and faculty engaged in innovative research and study related to your field.
