About LITS

The Automation Services Unit was formed in the mid-1980s to assist library administration with the implementation of library automation. The unit reports to the Dean of University Libraries due to the broad impact of information technology on library operations.

As computer and technology potential increased throughout the 1990s, human resources were scaled by the University Libraries to support these developments. The unit grew from two full-time employees in 1987 to ten full-time employees by 2005. A dozen student assistants, technicians and programmers are also employed to support the wide variety of library systems and applications.

In the summer of 2003, the unit was renamed Library Information Technology Services (LITS) to better reflect the broad impact that information technology has on library operations.
