African-American Digital Resources Cited in Midwest Archives Conference Publication

Providing access to digital resources to promote academic achievement for Ball State students, support teaching and research for faculty, and promote research globally is one of the goals of the University Libraries. Evidence of the success of these efforts can be found in publications, Web sites, and other sources that cite or mention the digital resources being developed by the Libraries. Mignonette Club

A recent example is the current issue of the Midwest Archives Conference Newsletter (volume 39, Number 2, October 2011, pp.10-12). It includes information on some of the Archives and Special Collections’ digital resources available on African-American history in an article entitled “On-line Documentation of the African-American Experience,” by Noah Lestra, University of Illinois. The article describes the Other Side of Middletown Photograph Collection, http://tiny.cc/a96sc, available in Ball States’ Digital Media Repository (DMR).

It also includes mention of the Archives and Special Collections’ online research guide to African-American History resources, http://bsu.libguides.com/archivesafricanam.

The article does not highlight all the digital resources that the University Libraries’ have created for the study of African-American history. Other relevant DMR resources include:

  • Middletown Digital Oral Histories, including interviews in the Black Middletown Oral History Project (1981); Black Muncie Oral History Project (1971); and Other Side of Middletown Oral Histories (2003)
  • Muncie Post-Democrat, anti-Ku Klux Klan newspaper, 1921-50
  • Muncie Times, local African-American newspaper, 1991-present

In addition, an online exhibit entitled “Celebrating Local African American History” is available on the Archives and Special Collections Web site.

For more information on these and other digital collections, contact John B. Straw, Assistant Dean for Digital Initiatives and Special Collections, JStraw@bsu.edu, 765-285-5078.
