The Science-Health Science Library
Located on the lower level of Cooper Science Complex, the Science-Health Science Library (SHSL) is a 1,500 sq. ft. branch library that is very popular among students and faculty who need science and medical informational materials.
The SHSL is large in services and resources. Thoughtful use of space enables this compact area to house 15 public access computers, scanners, printing and photocopying capabilities in addition to tables for group work, and a quieter space for individual study. Current books and periodicals, anatomical models, and course reserves are available, in addition to a full array of productivity software and online access to research databases and full-text articles. Pulling it all together is Kevin E. Brooks, Science Librarian, who also provides individual research assistance and course-related instruction sessions that enable students to become confident researchers and leverage the many resources available to them. Kevin and student assistants keep the area open about 80 hours a week.
Renovations to the area, upgrades in technological equipment, and a consistent level of helpful service are noticed by library users. In April 2009, the number of users surpassed 6,000 for a one-month period. It was a striking high point at the time and has since become more common. The figures for the 2011 fall semester show 6,785 users in September and 6,817 in October, the latter representing an 18% increase over the prior year.
