Legal Studies

A major in legal studies prepares you to work as a legal assistant or paralegal, under the supervision of a lawyer. You can choose an option in public law or business. The program is approved by the American Bar Association. (Visit our prelaw area for information about that program.)

Paralegals and legal assistants work in law offices, insurance companies, prosecutor’s offices, courts, and administrative agencies at all levels of government. Legal assistants work in a variety of different fields of law, such as civil, criminal, family, real estate, bankruptcy, environmental, immigration, trademark, employment, and labor.

The program also provides a strong foundation in law-related courses for students who plan to work in the courts, the legislature, or in the legal departments of government and businesses.

In addition to taking courses in legal research, family law, and litigation, students must complete an internship with a legal firm, bank, court, government agency, or corporation.

Ball State also offers a two-year associate degree in legal assistance.
