Whitinger Scholarships

The Whitinger Scholarship is the signature scholarship of the Honors College and is the most prestigious scholarship awarded by Ball State University. Established in 1976, the scholarship is supported by academic programs, social activities, and special opportunities as well as the funds for the scholarship itself.

The Whitinger Scholars Program honors 10 remarkably talented students each year. The award covers full tuition/fees and room and board and is renewable for a total of eight semesters, subject to annual review.

Scholarship recipients are selected by committee based on their academic ability, character, creativity, and potential for leadership. Whitinger Scholars may pursue any Ball State major. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  • First-time Honors College freshman, fall semester
  • At least a 3.70 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale in academic college preparatory courses (academic GPA as calculated by Ball State’s Office of Admissions)
  • Minimum SAT composite score of 1950, including a minimum of 600 on each of the three sub-scores: critical reading, math, and writing; or a minimum ACT composite of 29, including a minimum of 26 on the ACT math, English, and writing subscores

Honors College applicants who qualify for the award will be sent application materials upon completion of their application to Ball State. Requirements include a writing sample, resume, letter of reference, in addition to the other information already on file. Candidates are invited to spend a day on campus for an interview with a member of the selection committee, and also to complete a one-hour spontaneous essay.

All applicants are personally responsible for submitting their completed applications to the director of the program by the mid-January deadline. Specific information is on the application form. Self-nominations or applications or nominations from schools are not accepted. All interviews must be completed by March 1.

For more information, contact the Honors College.
