Placement Tests

Depending on your academic background and the major you plan to pursue, you may need to take a placement exam in mathematics and/or a foreign language. The exams are free of charge, and special preparation is not necessary.

Mathematics Exam
If you are considering one of the following majors, plan to take the mathematics placement exam:

  • biology
  • business (all majors in the Miller College of Business)
  • chemistry
  • computer science
  • elementary education
  • geology
  • manufacturing engineering or industrial technology
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • pre-audiology
  • pre-medicine
  • pre-dental studies
  • special education

If you need to take the mathematics placement exam prior to Orientation, contact the Office of Testing Programs.

Foreign Language Exam
Plan to take the foreign language placement exam if you are considering the following areas of study:

  • foreign language major or minor
  • elementary education major (only if selecting the modern languages concentration)
  • English major
  • international business major or minor
  • political science major
  • telecommunications major or minor
  • voice major

Taking the placement test can be advantageous to anyone who studied a foreign language in high school. To receive more information or to take the exam prior to Orientation, contact the Department of Modern Languages and Classics.

College Credit Already Earned
If you have completed or are completing any courses for college credit, please bring documentation, including course descriptions and grade slips (or a college transcript, if available), to assist your advisor at Orientation. Please also inform your advisor if you are participating in any testing programs for college credit, including AP (Advanced Placement), CLEP (College Level Examination Program), or IB (International Baccalaureate).
