Dear Charlie:

How can you tell the difference between depression and sadness.

Signed: What am I feeling

Dear What am I feeling,

Charlie hears your concern and is glad that you asked this question. Based on your signature and your question, Charlie is operating under the assumption that you are trying to make this distinction for yourself.

Sadness and depression both refer to emotional states and low mood and often feel very similar. It is normal to have times when you feel sad in reaction to something that occurs in your life. Usually sadness doesn’t linger over a period of time and does not significantly interfere with daily functioning. In contrast, depression is longer in duration and includes other symptoms such as: low energy and motivation; impaired concentration; feeling disinterested in activities; changes in appetite; irritability; sleep problems; and suicidal thoughts (among other things).

If your emotional state is impacting your life in a negative way, Charlie would encourage you to seek help and support. Charlie’s friends at the Counseling Center are available to meet with you if you are feeling sad, depressed, or anything in between. Charlie would encourage you to make an appointment at the Counseling Center (285-1736) to initiate this process. If you’re having thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else, Charlie strongly encourages you to call the Counseling Center immediately. Charlie is hoping you will reach out for the help you need and deserve.
