Treatment of Survivors of Trauma


  • Objective 1: The intern will have a broad knowledge and awareness of the literature and research about issues of childhood trauma as specified in the above areas.
  • Objective 2: The intern will have extensive knowledge about the literature and research about sexual assault/rape particularly as related to the university population.
  • Objective 3: The intern will develop and deepen skills in providing counseling services to survivors of childhood traumatic experiences.
  • Objective 4: The intern will develop and deepen skills in understanding symptomatology, diagnosing trauma response, and/or making differential diagnoses.
  • Objective 5: The intern will develop and deepen skills in providing group therapy to either survivors of childhood sexual abuse and/or survivors of sexual assault/rape.
  • Objective 6: The intern will have a broad and in-depth understanding of the ethical issues of providing treatment to trauma survivors including a comprehensive understanding of the current debate about "false memory."
  • Objective 7: The intern will develop outreach and consultation skills in competently providing prevention programming within the university community.
  • Objective 8: The intern will be sensitive and responsive to issues of diversity in providing both counseling and outreach services to trauma survivors.
  • Objective 9: The intern will be aware of the impact which his/her work in this area has on his/her feelings and professional development and be able to discuss openly in supervision.
  • Objective 10: In meeting one of the required clinical case reviews, the intern will provide a comprehensive clinical case presentation of their work with a trauma survivor.
  • Objective 11: The intern are expected work collaboratively to either develop a presentation to be submitted to a state, regional or national conference or submit an article for publication in this area.
The intern who elects this optional apprenticeship specialization will be assigned to a staff supervisor/mentor who will be responsible for coordinating the intern's intellectual and professional development in this area as well as providing additional individual clinical supervision. Additionally, the staff member will assist and supervise the intern(s) in the development of outreach programming, presentation and/or article development, and literature review.

The intern is expected to make the following minimum time requirements: (1) 40 to 50% of individual caseload devoted to direct service to trauma/abuse survivors; and, (2) organization and co-facilitation of either a survivors of sexual abuse group or survivors of sexual assault/rape group each semester. In addition to the regular clinical supervision, the intern will receive 1 hour of individual supervision weekly with the assigned specialization supervisor. Supervision of group therapy will be provided by the staff member who co-facilitates the group.

The intern who opts for this specialization is expected to take an active role in participating on the Counseling Center Sexual Assault Outreach Team which may or may not be the intern's primary outreach assignment. Although the primary purpose of the outreach team is to provide sexual assault/rape prevention programming, the focus of the team is continuing to expand in include other areas of relationship violence. The intern will be expected to participate in program development including refining rape prevention programming and program development for other areas of relationship violence. Interns are also expected to take an emerging leadership role in the overall management/coordination of the team outreach activities. The intern will assume a major leadership role in the coordination of the Annual Sexual Assault/Rape Awareness Week activities on campus. Supervision for these activities will be handled by the staff co-leaders of the Sexual Assault Team.

The intern is expected to work collaboratively with the staff supervisor(s) in developing a presentation dealing with childhood abuse/trauma and/or sexual assault prevention which should be submitted for inclusion in a conference program at either a state, regional, or national level. The intern may also elect to submit an article for publication within one of these areas.

The intern will be evaluated in a variety of ways by their specialization supervisor, staff group leader/co-leader, and outreach team leaders. Since the intern is making this an area of specialization, supervisors will do all they can to assist the intern and mentor the intern in development of his/her expertise in this area. If, for any reason, the supervisor/mentors in this area believe that the intern should not specialize in this area, this will be discussed in depth with the intern and with the training director. The aim of evaluation is to insure the intern has advanced knowledge and skill in this area and is seen as a developing expert in the area.

  1. The intern's supervisor/mentor in this area will fill out a Clinical Supervisors evaluation for individual clinical work three times during the internship (Appendix 2).
  2. The supervisor mentor will fill out a Special Projects Evaluation form at the end of each semester that reflects an evaluation of the intern's competence in providing training, programming, outreach and consultation activities.
  3. The team leader(s) on the Sexual Assault Programming Team projects will evaluate the intern on the Outreach/Consultation Team Leader(s) Evaluation of Intern form (Appendix 2) twice yearly at the end of each semester.
  4. Group co-leaders will fill out the Group Evaluation Form at the end of each semester they co-lead with the intern (appendix 2).
  5. Supervisors will also provide ongoing informal feedback to the intern.
  6. Supervisors will provide oral feedback to the training director through meetings of the Supervisors' Committee.
  7. The interns will evaluate their supervisors, project coordinators and group co-leaders as well on the designated forms (Appendix 3).
  8. An overall assessment of the intern's level of expertise in the specialization will be done at the end of the internship year and be a part of the Attainment of Training Goals Evaluation (Appendix 2).
  9. Evaluation is to be seen as reciprocal and shared openly between the intern and his or her supervisors and the training director.
