Typically the time and energy you give to the demanding student is never enough. This student often attempts to control your time and believes the amount of time received is a reflection of their worth. Some of the signs of a demanding student are:

  • A sense of entitlement
  • A need for control
  • Dependence upon others for self-esteem
  • Difficulty respecting time limits, structure and rules

Here are some do’s and don'ts in helping the demanding student:

      Do:

  • Empower the student to make his or her own decisions
  • Acknowledge your time commitments and set limits
  • Be direct and honest
  • Offer referrals to other resources

      Don’t:

  • Be the only person the student has for support
  • Agree to things you don’t want or have time to do
  • Give advice
  • Avoid the student
  • Argue with them
