Are Greek life assistantships available to any major?
Greek graduate assistantships are open to students in all masters and doctoral programs although preference is given to students in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education program.
What are the qualifications for a Greek life assistantship?
Greek graduate assistants must possess a variety of skills and talents.
Minimum Requirements:
- Demonstrated involvement in a student or volunteer organization
- Strong interest in mentoring, developing, and supervising students
- Strong ability to work as part of a team and autonomously
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships
- Willingness to work evening and weekend hours
- Excellent decision-making and time management skills
- Strong confrontation skills
- Demonstrated leadership experience within a student organization
- Demonstrated facilitation or event planning experience
- Demonstrated understanding of and effectively working with fraternities and sororities
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience with chapter and/or council leadership positions
- Knowledge of NIC, NPHC, NPC and NALFO umbrella organizations and FIPG
What are the duties and responsibilities of a Greek life graduate assistant?
There are basic duties and responsibilities for all Greek life graduate assistants and more specific job descriptions developed specifically for each member of the Greek staff team.
Greek Council Graduate Advisor
- Responsible for advising one Greek council (Panhellenic, Interfraternity or National Pan-Hellenic) along with flexibility to assist with other aspects of the Greek community.
- Hold and conduct consistent office hours in the Office of Student Life.
- Serve on call 2-3 weeks throughout the semester.
- Assist with the development and implementation of Greek programs and initiatives.
- Assist with general Office of Student Life duties and responsibilities.
- Educate members on and ensure adherence to all National, local and university policies.
- Serve as a liaison between the university, Greek council and fraternity and sorority members.
Live -in Graduate Advisors
- Responsible for one aspect of Greek Affairs (i.e. leadership development, scholarship) along with flexibility to assist with other aspects of the Greek community.
- Live in the chapter facility.
- Serve on call 2-3 weeks throughout the semester.
- Over see facilities management.
- Hold and conduct consistent office hours in the Office of Student Life and at chapter house.
- Assist with implementation of encumbrance policy when necessary.
- Assist with educational programming.
- Assist chapter leadership with internal chapter operations.
- Communicate regularly with the housing corporation and chapter alumni/alumnae
- Educate members on and ensure adherence to all National, local and university policies.
- Serve as a liaison between the university, advisory board, Housing Corporation, local chapter and national organization.

How many hours per week does a Greek life assistant work?
As a Greek life graduate assistant you work approximately 20 hours per week. You are expected to fulfill all responsibilities on a weekly basis so some weeks may require more hours to fulfill duties.
How many Greek life assistantships will be available for 2011-2012?
Up to 3 Greek Council Graduate Advisor positions and up to 1 Live-in Graduate Advisor positions will be available for the 2011-2012 academic year. These positions have been filled for the 2011-2012 academic year.
