Join a Sorority

Thank you for your interest in joining a sorority (women's organizations). There are many sororities on campus, and you are encouraged to browse our Web site for more information on our many chapters.

The best thing to do before you participate in recruitment or membership intake is to do research. You can learn more about the sororities by visiting the chapters page and reading our information about Greek terms, academic requirements, financial commitmentsthe advantages of membership and frequently asked questions. Or, join us at the Meet the Greeks Informational, on Saturday, August 20, 2011 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the Worthen Arena, Room 201.

Panhellenic Council (PHC) Recruitment

The Panhellenic Council sponsors formal sorority recruitment each year during the fall semester. Formal recruitment is always planned during the beginning weeks of the fall semester so it does not interfere with too much of your schoolwork.

Recruitment involves a few days of open houses that allow you to preview sorority life at Ball State and five days of recruitment activities. The last day of recruitment is what we call “Bid Day,” where, if you choose to participate, may receive your formal invitation of membership to join a sorority.

During these days of recruitment activities, the sororities invite you to come over to their chapter houses or suites to see what sorority life can offer. Through different recruitment activities such as philanthropic projects, lots of conversation and a short presentation by the sorority women themselves, you can get an idea of what sisterhood means to each individual chapter.

Each day in the schedule has a different atmosphere where it could range from relaxed feel to a more formal feel.

The Panhellenic Council executive board and recruitment guides (or Pi Chis) organize these different events of recruitment. You will tour these recruitment activities in a group lead by a Pi Chi. This is referred to as your “recruitment group,” and each group sticks together throughout the entire week, supporting each other through the recruitment process.

Recruitment is an exciting and fun experience that allows you to make new friends with both your recruitment group and the chapters you visit. We urge you to consider the recruitment process as a way of becoming a member of the Panhellenic Association and the Greek community as a whole. We hope you keep an open mind about all the chapters. Look at what each sorority has to offer and what makes it stand apart from the others. After all, together we share a common goal. Please check our sorority profile section for more information about each chapter.

Remember, going through recruitment does not obligate you to join a chapter. However, by participating in formal recruitment you can gain a better idea of what sorority life is all about.

To participate in Formal Recruitment you need to complete the registration form.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Membership Intake

Ball State is home to four traditionally African-American sororities and one traditionally Latina sorority. These chapters recruit through a process known as intake. Although these organizations consist primarily of minority women, they are open to all women at Ball State.

The intake process for every chapter is defined by its international/national organization. Membership intake consists of attending a meeting, completing an application directly to the sorority of interest, gaining approval from the organization, learning the group’s history and traditions and participating in initiation.

The National Pan-Hellenic (NPHC) intake process at the Ball State is designed to give both you and chapter members a fair and equal opportunity to become acquainted as friends.

The NPHC hosts a week of events each fall to welcome you to Ball State. The week of events allows you to meet members from the chapters and learn more about their events and intake processes. During NPHC's week of events, they have an NPHC Meet the Greeks that allow you to learn more about their member chapters.

Throughout the year, chapters hold social, informational and educational events, which provide you with the opportunity to meet the members of each organization. When conducting membership intake, chapters hold interest meetings to provide you information and membership forms. Membership intake is held at various times during the year. Please check the sorority profile page of our Web site and the Web site of each sorority for further details and contact information.
