My son or daughter is considering joining a fraternity or sorority. What advice should I give him or her?

Since membership in a fraternity or sorority is a lifelong commitment, anyone considering joining should take the time to make a thoughtful decision.

The best advice that you can give your student is to conduct research on the chapters at Ball State and ask lots of questions during informational sessions and recruitment events.

Local chapter and national Web sites are a great, convenient way to gather information about what membership in a specific chapter can offer and the expectations that come with joining.

We also recommend that students ask the current members questions about time and financial commitments, housing obligations (if applicable), the new member orientation process and general member expectations.

Also, be sure to encourage him or her to keep an open mind and get to know members in all organizations so he or she can find out which one fits the best.
