RA Contract

I, ________________________, accept the appointment as a Resident Assistant in the residence halls of Ball State University for the 2014-2015 academic year, and I understand the following conditions are a part of this acceptance.

1. This agreement is for the 2014-2015 academic year. Employment as a Resident Assistant is contingent upon the approval of the Residence Hall Director, the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life, and the Vice President for Student Affairs. Reapplication is necessary for each subsequent year of employment, and employment for each year is contingent on the approval of the Residence Hall Director, the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life, and the Vice President for Student Affairs.

2. I, as the Resident Assistant, or the Office of Housing and Residence Life, upon written notice, may terminate this agreement at any time during the period of the agreement. If termination occurs, I understand I am financially responsible for the remaining portion of the residence hall housing contract and I will be reassigned to another residence hall. If I decide to move off-campus, I am still responsible for the remaining portion of the residence hall contract as stated in the cancellation clause.

3. A Resident Assistant will receive a salary equal to full room and board and a stipend of $1,300 per year (paid in 10 taxed payments of $130) for services as a Resident Assistant. This stipend will be pro-rated in the event the Resident Assistant vacates the position during the period of employment. A Resident Assistant will receive the 21-Plus meal plan. In the event the Resident Assistant spends all available debit dollars, no additional funds will be provided by Housing and Residence Life.

4. Participation in outside organizations, committee work, student government, fraternities and sororities (including participating in pledging), or extra-curricular activities, must have prior written approval from the Residence Hall Director and the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life. A Resident Assistant cannot pledge a fraternity or sorority during the first semester of employment.

5. A Resident Assistant may not be employed in any other capacity on- or off-campus. A Resident Assistant may work additional jobs only during extended breaks, which are stated here to be only the break between Fall and Spring semester and Spring Break. This work may not in any way affect the responsibilities of opening/closing the residence hall(s).

6. Because of the extensive time demands of the position, a Resident Assistant may take an overload of classes (defined as 18 hours or more) only with prior written approval of the Residence Hall Director and approval from the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life. Participation in an internship or student teaching must have prior written approval from the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life.

7. A Resident Assistant must remain on-campus and be available in the residence hall a minimum of two (2) weekends per month. The Office of Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to designate specific weekends as closed (i.e. All Resident Assistants will be required to remain on-campus).

8. A Resident Assistant candidate is required to have a minimum accumulative grade point average of 2.50 or above when they begin the Resident Assistant position. A Resident Assistant must maintain a minimum accumulative GPA of 2.50 during the period of employment. There will be a review of any staff member whose GPA falls below a 2.30 for a semester even if the overall GPA is at least a 2.50. A staff member whose GPA falls below a 2.00 will be terminated.

9. A Resident Assistant must participate in the Student Staff Orientation program which is held prior to each semester. The Student Staff Orientation is scheduled for the eight (8) to ten (10) day period prior to the opening of the residence halls. The Spring Orientation is scheduled for the weekend prior to the opening of the residence halls. A Resident Assistant will attend all required special meetings and events. RAs are required to attend a minimum of two (2) Student Staff In-service Training sessions per semester.

10. A Resident Assistant is expected to be a positive role model through personal example. A Resident Assistant may be subject to higher standards than a person in the general student population.

11. A Resident Assistant is expected to respect the dignity of all individuals and refrain from language or behavior which would be incongruent with that respect. A Resident Assistant is expected to handle disagreements, disappointments, and frustrations in a manner which reflects positively upon themselves, their staff, and the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

12. A Resident Assistant is required to read and follow the Resident Assistant Manual of Ball State University.

13. In accepting this contract, the Resident Assistant’s loyalty, commitment, and fulfillment of expectation must be to Ball State University, the Office of Housing and Residence Life, and the Residence Hall Director and/or Assistant Residence Hall Director.
