Most high school students have used alcohol, and many have experimented with drugs. Kids listen to their parents, and while you may feel that you don't have much influence from 100 miles away, you do. If you start hearing your son or daughter talk about "going to parties," you have a right to ask questions about those parties, such as:
If the party was on a weeknight, then ask about the next morning's classes. Let your student clearly know that skipping classes, engaging in risky behavior, or taking his/her education less than seriously is not OK with you.
