Healthy habits instilled while in college can carry on throughout the lives of the students and influence the lives of their families and community. Healthy living can result in lower health care costs and lead to improved home and work environments.
Demonstrating our commitment to wellness, the new Student Recreation and Wellness Facility will be a $40 million, 200,000-square-foot facility with three times the student fitness space and seven gymnasiums. It will open in 2010.
Your gift will help provide a facility that will increase participation in staff and student activities, encourage wellness, and add vitality to campus life.
“I love to work out, and having the opportunity to stay active is really important to me. I’m really anticipating the extra fitness space," says Lindsay Fouch, a secondary education major
"Every time I’m in in the current facility at night, it’s just jam-packed. The extra space would be helpful. I definitely think this is something the university should invest in. I’ve also been to recreational facilities at other universities, and I think ours will be top-notch. It’s really exciting.”
$30 million will come from student fees, and $10 million in donations are needed for the project, which includes:
- five new or completely renovated gymnasiums
- 5,400 square feet for specialized forms of conditioning such as yoga and martial arts
- 3,000 square feet for Human Performance Laboratory exercise and research
- 20,000-square-foot multiactivity court sports forum, which will be an indoor/outdoor facility for soccer, baseball, rugby, and other sports
- rock climbing wall
- gaming area with pool tables, table tennis, and other table games
- outdoor pursuits area—an office space where you can find out about mountain hikes, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, and other organized trips. Equipment will be available to rent.
- indoor 1/8-mile track
- grab-and-go food service area
