Ball State Bold: Every Ball State undergraduate will have the opportunity to experience immersive learning. As many as 100 unique immersive learning projects will be created campuswide.
Revolutionizing the traditional, teacher-centered classroom, Ball State’s immersive learning experiences stretch students through creative rather than directed inquiry.
As the signature element of Ball State’s Education Redefined: Strategic Plan 2007-2012, immersive learning

“The vibrancy and speed of communications in the 21st century are matched only by the increasing complexity of global culture. The graceful expression of a global brand requires a balance of analytical and intuitive skill: not only clear vision, but also sophisticated awareness of human interaction. Young leaders must be nurtured in these more creative skills as much as they are educated to be competitive. No place strikes that balance as well as Ball State.” —Angela Ahrendts alumna 1993, CEO of Burberry, London |
experiences boldly prepare students to be citizens of the 21st century by bridging content knowledge, skill of application, societal need, and lifelong learning.
Ball State’s
immersive learning experiences are diverse and wide-ranging but share similar characteristics.
No matter the academic discipline, all immersive learning experiences:
- shift much of the responsibility of learning to students, helping them synthesize classroom instruction and find practical solutions to real-world problems
- challenge students to work collaboratively in multifunctional and multidisciplinary teams
- require students to manifest learning in tangible outcomes that live on with utility beyond the experience itself
- help students better understand societal issues in global, local, economic, or environmental contexts
Our students' experiences best illustrate immersive learning.
Of all of Ball State’s innovative initiatives, immersive learning for each undergraduate is the most revolutionary. Immersive learning sets us apart from other institutions competing for scholars. Our strategic plan boldly challenges each department on campus to offer immersive experiences by 2012.
Immersive learning requires a significant investment. Students often travel off campus, sometimes around the world, in their collaborative pursuits. Supplies for real-world research and for the creation of a lasting product have real-world prices.
Your gift will help ensure that all Ball State students have opportunity to participate in a transformative, innovative immersive learning experience—an educational experience that will set them apart from their peers.
