Timeline

Proposals are due in the Sponsored Programs Office
Thursday, September 9, 2010,

addressed to
Mary Ann Olinger
in the Office of University Development,
Alumni Center, room 257.

Proposals will be forwarded by the Sponsored Programs Office to Mary Ann Olinger in the Office of University Development.  Selected proposals will be invited for presentations to the members of Discovery in November 2010.  Discovery members will make their funding selections in January 2011. Decisions will be announced in February 2011.

Selection Criteria

Discovery funds projects that further the mission of the university as expressed in the 2007–2012 strategic plan.

Discovery members are interested in projects that significantly impact Ball State students, offer immersive learning opportunities, and have potential for other external funding in the future.

Proposal Format

The proposal must be limited to a cover sheet, three pages of copy and a one-page budget summary.  Type must be in a font size no smaller than 12 point.  Margins must be at least one inch on all sides.  Please do not use staples.  Paper clips are acceptable.  No folders or binders will be accepted.  Please submit fifteen (15) copies of the proposal.  (SPO will coordinate proposal duplication and submission to University Development.)

The cover page will include:  the title of the project, the name of the project director, amount requested, number of students expected to be involved in the project, and signatures of appropriate Department Chair, Dean and Provost.  (No signatures are required, as University clearance procedures will provide for the approval of Department Chair, Dean and any other units involved with the project.)

The narrative should provide a general description of the project, an indication of anticipated student involvement, desired outcomes, staff participants, and other information to be shared with the members of Discovery.  Budget information should include the total project budget and the components to be funded by Discovery.

Funded projects are expected to report project progress and accomplishments to the Discovery awards committee at the end of one calendar year.  The report will be sent to the Office of University Development to be copied and distributed to the Discovery board of directors and awards committee.

Each year the selected projects will receive monetary awards from available Discovery funds.  Amounts awarded will be transferred from the Ball State University Foundation to the Contracts and Grants Office in March 2011.

Re-Application

A project that does not receive funding in any particular cycle may re-apply the following year.
A funded project is not eligible for a second Discovery award.
The manager of a funded project may apply for an award for another project after one intervening year.

Conflict of Interest

Any Discovery member listed as a participant in a project proposal may not serve on the awards committee for that selection cycle.

Guidelines

A timeline for the awards cycle is established each year.
Application guidelines are published and distributed to appropriate project directors according to the current time line.

The Sponsored Programs Office works with project directors in proposal development and submission in accordance with the Proposal development and Submission Timetable (http://www.bsu.edu/research/media/pdg/proposaltimetable.pdf).

Funds awarded to a project and not utilized due to unforeseen circumstances will be returned to the Discovery account with the Ball State University Foundation.  At the direction of the awards committee those returned funds may be awarded to another project, added to the fund to be awarded another year, or build toward endowment of the fund.
