Our Educational Mission

Great universities have great museums.

Everything we do is guided by the David Owsley Museum of Art Interpretive Plan.

The Interpretive Plan may be viewed in two ways:

The David Owsley Museum of Art presented about its Interpretive Plan with Springuel Consulting at the international colloquium on “Positioning Academic Heritage. Challenges for Universities, Museums and Society in the 21st century” at Ghent University in Belgium, on November 20, 2013.

The David Owsley Museum of Art (DOMA) at Ball State University directly addresses Ball State's mission and vision, and its emphasis on excellence expressed in Ball State's Strategic Plan. The deep and high-quality collection represents most of the world’s great cultures, both modern and historical, enabling faculty and students from many disciplines to utilize high-quality and original works of art in a variety of learning situations.

Central to the David Owsley Museum of Art's mission is the provision of educational programming that will further faculty, staff, student, and public utilization and understanding of the museum and its collection, of museums in general, and of the arts.

Our educational philosophy centers on bringing together the needs of visitors and the resources of the museum (collection, exhibition, staff, volunteer, and financial), and balancing responsibility to the university (of which the museum is a department) with service to the community.

In facilitating communication between the work of art and the viewer, we subscribe to a philosophy of learner-centered connectors informed by a thorough knowledge of the collection and methods and strategies for effective teaching.
