Volunteers are essential at the David Owsley Museum of Art, especially for tours, special events, and outreach.
University and students, campus and community members comprise our volunteer docent corps, serving as museum teachers for visiting groups.
The docent program allows a small number of select Ball State students and community members to volunteer and lead tours of the museum for groups from the community and the university. These museum teachers and students undergo extensive training, meeting once a week with the Director of Education and Education Program Coordinator to learn about the collection and effective methods of conducting an engaging tour.
Meetings for those interested in becoming a docent or volunteer are typically on the first Thursday of the semester at 3:30 p.m. Training is provided on the same day and time throughout the fall and spring semesters.
Please email the museum if you would like to attend or be put on the mailing list. Prospective docents, who are students, must have a G.P.A. of at least a 3.0. All docents must complete two semesters of training and commit to at least one additional semester volunteering as a docent.
Please complete and submit an application to be a volunteer. The application will open in a separate window as an online form. Once you have submitted the form, a staff member will follow up in 2-4 business days. Complete the form anytime and receive an e-mail reminder about the August or January docent information meeting.
Note: Selected interns are subject to a background check and will be asked to complete a Ball State University Background Check Consent and Release Form.
