Board of Directors Meeting
Thursday, November 15, 2012

Board Members Present: Shannon Craig, Julie Eastes, DeLisa Flynn, Kathy Hutson, Melissa Matthews, Jan Noel, Sara Perkins, Linda Siktberg, Sue Taylor, and Kathy Thomas.
President DeLisa Flynn called the meeting to order at 5:44 p.m. and introduced new board members Shannon Craig and Sara Perkins. There were no corrections or additions to the minutes for August 29, 2012. Kathy Hutson made a motion to accept the minutes and Jan Noel seconded. The motion passed by voice vote.
Alumni Council Report –
Kathy Thomas reported Alumni council last met on September 22, 2012. Council members were introduced to Julie Stroh, Executive Director of Alumni Programs. There were 4,000 applications from the freshman class; 3.600 were accepted. The Immersive Learning program had 16,000 students participate in it. The Museum of Art will be increasing its space thanks to a $2.2 million dollar gift from Charlie Brown. Also due to begin construction January 2013 is the new McKinley Commons; a hotel/conference center for the hospitality and food management students.
Update regarding annual gift requirement –
Sue Taylor reminded members that in order to be an active member of the board, they are required to make a donation to the BSU Foundation every year. Board members may make their contribution or a portion of it to the Nursing Alumni Society Fund #6302. Annual contributions qualify for a tax credit in the state of Indiana. Other Nursing Accounts include: 6301-Nursing Department; 6302-Nursing Alumni Fund; 6303-Nursing Faculty Development; Nursing Scholarship Fund; 6351-Chester and Mildred Berry Scholarship; 6353-Ruth C. Myers Scholarship; 6354-Garnette Higi Scholarship Fund; 6355-Class of 1949 Student Nurse Emergency Fund; 6356-Anna B. (Hanley) Binge Memorial Scholarship; 6357-Lisa R. Poppleton Memorial Nursing Scholarship; 6358-Ada and J. Richard Martin Scholarship; 6359-Louise Spall Nursing Scholarship Fund; 6360-Geraldine A. Hansen Nursing Scholarship; 6361-Renewed Hearts Memorial Scholarship; 6362-Carolyn Jean Miller Memorial Scholarship; 6363-Sally C. December Class Meeting Report -
Flynn met with the senior class a few weeks ago and has another meeting scheduled with them on Monday, November 26th. This class took advantage of fundraising opportunities and has done very well.
Nursing Pinning Ceremony Reminders – December 14, 2012
Rehearsal December 13, 2012 at Sursa Hall –
A. Scissors and Flowers – Brandy Renz has the scissors. Kathy Hutson will order the flowers (60 corsages) and have them delivered to Doc Hunter in the School of Nursing on Friday.
B. Presenters for flowers and scissors – Sara Perkins and Kathy Thomas have volunteered.
C. Distribution of Programs – Flynn will contact the May officers to have them pass out the programs.
D. Other – there will be live video streaming of the ceremony. Linda Siktberg also reminded that the senior clothing order will be included in this year’s LINK. Items will be available to be picked up at the spring Nursing Banquet.
Confirm Committee Assignments and Meeting Dates –
A. Scholarship Committee (nominations deadline Feb. 1, 2013) includes: DeLisa Flynn, Chairperson, Shannon Craig, Doreen Johnson, Sara Perkins, Cheryl Riwitis, and Ruth Ann Tolle. B. Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award Recommendations – Due December 1 includes: Kathy Hutson, Chairperson, Phyllis Chapin, Melissa Matthews, Connie McIntosh, Jan Noel, Kristin Reedy, and Brandy Renz. Both committees will meet Tuesday March 12, 2013 in the Alumni Center.
Department Update -
Linda Siktberg reported there are 73 students admitted to the spring class with 7 spaces being saved for those students who need to repeat a class. The May class will be quite large with an enrollment of 90-95 students. The SON is working with another agency to provide clinicals to students. The new agency will provide their own faculty, as well as have the same criteria as the SON.
Other Business –
Thomas discussed finding new ways of involving younger alumni with the Nursing Alumni Society, part of the new strategic plan beginning in 2013. New members Shannon Craig and Sara Perkins agreed to contact their former classmates via their social media site, Facebook. Check out the BSU Nursing Alumni Facebook page at
