The Northeast Indiana Area Health Education Center (NEI-AHEC) is
part of a state and nationwide network of programs working to enhance access to
quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the
supply and distribution of health care professionals through community/academic
Working in partnership with community organizations, academic institutions, health providers and government agencies, NEI-AHEC promotes health career opportunities to students and underrepresented minorities, encourages students and health professionals to work in areas with limited health care providers and enhances the knowledge and skills of a diverse workforce of health professionals throughout northeast Indiana.
The center has helped to launch a new chapter of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) on Ball State's campus. The NEI-AHEC is hosted by Ball State’s
Building Better Communities and serves a 17-county region: Adams, Allen, Blackford, DeKalb, Delaware, Elkhart, Grant,
Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Randolph, Steuben, Wabash, Wells,
The National AHEC
Organization was recently awarded funding from the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention for a 2015-16 project to provide education to health
professionals regarding the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The award
supports the hiring of a national leadership team, evaluation staff and 10 HPV
Regional Coordinators to coordinate activities in each region, assess the
environment, work with states and build partnerships. Selected AHEC state
entities (i.e., Northeast Indiana AHEC) will work to increase awareness as well
as train health professionals about the HPV vaccine.
