Hazardous Materials

The Environmental Health and Safety office serves as a resource for the handling, storage, shipping, and transportation of hazardous materials for the University in accordance with the BSU Hazardous Materials Transportation Procedure.

Training is provided by the EHS Environmental Specialist on U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) hazardous material transportation requirements to all university employees engaged in the identification, shipping, receipt, transportation, and handling of regulated hazardous materials.

The Environmental Specialist also serves as the natural gas Master Meter Operator as required by DOT and Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) requirements for natural gas distributors and for general safety in the distribution and use of natural and propane gas on the University campus.  This entails the development of specific Emergency, Operation and Maintenance, Integrity Management, and Operator Qualification Plans and training of involved university maintenance and response staff.
