New Staff/Service Employee Orientation

Purpose:
To ensure that every new employee receives a positive and consistent introduction to Ball State University. The employee's first few weeks-even the first day-can have a profound effect on the quality of the work relationship, establishment, and maintenance of open channels of communications, and other aspects which are critical to promoting loyalty, job satisfaction and performance, longevity, and overall enhancement.

Direction:
Although this program is directed towards the newcomer, the crucial interactive role played by each person who comes in contact with a new employee needs to be emphasized. The plan described below identifies three phases, which constitute a comprehensive orientation to the Ball State community.

Phase I - Introduction
- Who? University Human Resource Services
- Where? Administration Building Room 321
- When? Within first two weeks
- What happens?
New employee participates in paperwork completion activity (e.g.: tax forms, insurance enrollments, etc.) and views several videos.

Phase II - Job Orientation
This phase describes on-the-job orientation including job description, workplace introductions, department and university goals, etc. Supervisors are primarily responsible for conducting this training.

Phase III - Organizational Orientation
Presenters:
Representatives from Emerging Technology, Learning and Development, Payroll & Employee Benefits, Recreational Services, Wellness, etc.

Date/Time:
This is a 3-hour training session that is conducted in October and April. New Employees will be notified of the session they are expected to attend.

Agenda:
New employee receive detailed information regarding the university's benefits, facilities, history, organizational structure, and services that are available to them. The new employee's role will be explained and he/she will have an opportunity to ask questions of the presenters. In addition, attendees will view and discuss an 18-minute WorkSmarts video.
