Fall faculty awards are given every year in a variety of categories. Below, you will see a brief description of each area a faculty member can win an award. Also, take a look at our winners for this year and offer them your congratulations.
The Outstanding Teaching Award honors a member of the full-time faculty who models excellence in teaching. Good practices in teaching reflect the highest standards of pedagogy, creativity, or innovation in the classroom and the curriculum, leadership in advancing teaching and learning impact on students or colleagues, and scholarship of teaching.
The Creative Endeavor Award is given in recognition of contributions to the university community in the creative arts. (Any area fundable under a National Endowment for the Arts granting program, including dance, design arts, folk arts, inter-arts, literature, media arts, music, opera-musical theatre, theatre, and visual arts, is eligible.)
The Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award is given annually to that faculty academic advisor who best demonstrates both the information and relational (interpersonal, professional) aspects of quality academic advising.
The Outstanding Administrative Award is given in recognition of demonstrated excellence in administrative service to the university. School/department chairs are also eligible for this award.
The Outstanding Diversity Advocate Award is given in recognition of demonstrated excellence in championing the cause of diversity by a member of the Ball State community.
The Outstanding Faculty Service Award is given in recognition of exceptional professional service. Service may be to the department, college, university, profession, community, or a combination thereof.
The Outstanding Junior Faculty Award is given in recognition of demonstrated composite excellence in teaching, scholarly, or creative productivity and service by a faculty member beginning an academic career, who has been at Ball State for no more than five years, in a tenure track position, and no more than seven full time years in higher education.
The Outstanding Faculty Award is given in recognition of demonstrated composite excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative productivity and service by a faculty member who has an academic record at Ball State of more than five years.
The Research Award is given to an individual faculty member in recognition of contributions in the area of research.
Nominations for all “Outstanding Awards” may be made by students, faculty, professional personnel, or administrators. For specific award criteria and nomination procedures, please contact the Office of Associate Provost Marilyn Buck.
Excellence in Teaching Awards
Ball State’s Office of Educational Excellence (OEE) and the Office of the Provost sponsor these awards. The award recognizes some of our most creative and deserving faculty for their roles as teachers.
Each year, students are asked to nominate teachers for their expertise, dedication, and talent in the classroom. To nominate the teacher who has really made a difference in their life as a student, students go to a link in Blackboard. When nominations are complete, the top vote getters move on to a second round where a selection committee, comprised of past award winners and students, choose the winner. The award winners are given an opportunity to teach a specially designed “dream course,” the course they have always wanted to teach.
Established more than a decade ago courtesy of gifts from Victor Lawhead, former dean of Ball State's undergraduate programs, and his wife, Doris Lawhead, a former academic adviser, the Lawhead Award is presented annually and is based on teaching evaluations, contribution to the University Core Curriculum, freshmen activities, service to the community, and support from faculty and students.
Established in 2002, this award honors a full-time faculty member who has proven to be the most dedicated to teaching extended education courses at off-campus distance education sites. The award was named after Joseph Rawlings, dean emeritus of the Division of Online and Strategic Learning. Rawlings worked nearly 20 years to create and develop the university's distance learning program.
