Main Ceremony

Spring 2018 commencement will be May 5 on the Arts Terrace. The day begins with a main ceremony to celebrate all graduates. Before the event, graduates should check where they need to line up.

Also, you may view a live webstream of the ceremony starting at 10 a.m. on this page.

  • 8 a.m.—Guest seating opens.
  • 9 a.m.—Graduates must be in the appropriate line.
  • 9:30 a.m.—Processional begins. Guests who aren’t seated may experience delays.
  • 10 a.m.—Opening remarks begin.
  • 11:30 a.m.—approximately Main Ceremony concludes.

The ceremony will also include:

  • hooding of honorary degree recipients
  • recognition and hooding of doctoral and specialist in education candidates
  • conferral of bachelor’s, master’s, and associate degrees

Gifts and Photos

  • You may purchase announcements and rings from Balfour.
  • You may pre-order floral bouquets for graduates from Gradflowers.
  • You may purchase commencement photos from Grad Images.

College Ceremonies

After the main ceremony, each college hosts an individual ceremony where individual student names are announced as graduating students cross the stage. See the times and locations for individual college ceremonies.

Information for Students

If you are eligible to participate in the ceremony, you must indicate your participation choice (yes or no) on your graduation application. If you change your plans to participate, please email us.

On the day of the ceremony, you will have different instructions for lining up and guidelines for the academic regalia you'll wear. See below for more information.

Bachelor's and Associates

Line-up Information

Each college will have a sign, and candidates will line up behind the sign corresponding to the college of their major/minor.

  • Time: 9 a.m.—Graduates must be on time.
  • Location: Fine Arts Terrace
  • Wear your cap and gown
  • There is no place to change or to store personal items

Academic Attire

If you intend to participate in the ceremony, you will need to purchase the necessary regalia such as the cap, gown, and tassel. The Ball State Bookstore in the Art and Journalism Building has regalia in stock at all times.

Cap and Gown

  • black gown
  • black cap, flat mortar board, with cardinal tassel for Associate's or cardinal and white tassel for Bachelor's

  • cum laude – bronze medallion
  • magna cum laude – silver medallion
  • summa cum laude – gold medallion
  • College of Architecture and Planning –stole approved by the college
  • Honors College – red and white cords
  • Miller College of Business - Miller Scholars stole
  • Military - red, white and blue cords
  • Mortar Board – gold and silver cords
  • Phi Kappa Phi – blue and gold cords

A faculty member of your committee or chair will hood you during the ceremony.

Procession out of Lucina will begin at 9:30 a.m., so please be prompt in arriving.

  • doctor of education (EdD)—gold tassel and light blue hood

  • doctor of nursing practice (DNP)—gold tassel and apricot hood
