Ceremony Dates and Times

The May Commencement ceremonies honor students who will complete degree requirements at the end of the spring semester. The 2017 ceremonies will be May 6.

Tickets are not required for any of Ball State's commencement ceremonies.

Also, you may view a live webstream of the Spring 2017 Commencement ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at www.bsu.edu.

Main Ceremony

The day begins with a main ceremony to celebrate all graduates. Before the event, graduates should check where they need to line up.

The processional starts at 9:30 a.m. outside on the Arts Terrace, with student lineup at 9:00 a.m. Opening remarks begin at 10 a.m. and will last about an hour and a half.

The ceremony will also include:

  • hooding of honorary degree recipients
  • recognition and hooding of doctoral and specialist in education candidates
  • conferral of bachelor’s, master’s, and associate degrees

You may purchase announcements and rings from Balfour.

  • 9:00 a.m. Graduates must be in the appropriate line
  • 9:30 a.m. Guests who aren’t seated may experience delays as student processional begins

  • 10:00 a.m. Opening Remarks
  • 11:30 am approximately Main Ceremony concludes

College Ceremonies

After the main ceremony, each college hosts an individual ceremony where individual student names are announced as graduating students cross the stage.

Inclement Weather

We plan to host the main ceremony, as well as the Teachers College ceremony outdoors. However, if we have rain or other inclement weather, locations and times are subject to change.

Information for Students

If you are eligible to participate in the ceremony, you must indicate your participation choice (yes or no) on your graduation application. If you change your plans to participate, please email us.

On the day of the ceremony, you will have different instructions for lining up and guidelines for the academic regalia you’ll wear. See below for more information.

Bachelor's and Associates

Line-Up Information

Each college will have a sign, and candidates will line up behind the sign corresponding to the college of their major/minor.

  • Time: 9 a.m.- Graduates must be on time.
  • Location: Campus Drive (near Lucina Hall)
  • Wear your cap and gown
  • There is no place to change or to store personal items

Doctorate and Specialist in Education

Line-up Information

Meet and line up at 9 a.m. in the east lobby of Lucina Hall.

A faculty member of your committee or chair will hood you during the ceremony.

Procession out of Lucina will begin at 9:30 a.m., so please be prompt in arriving.

If you intend to participate in the ceremony, you will need to purchase the necessary regalia such as the cap, gown, and tassel. The Ball State Bookstore in the Art and Journalism Building has regalia in stock at all times.
