For Graduate Students
All master's, doctoral, and specialist students must apply to receive graduate degrees.
The Graduate School must receive your application for graduation within the first four weeks of the semester in which you plan to graduate. (If you plan to graduate in the summer, you must apply for graduation within the first two weeks of the summer semester.) Obtain a planned program from your major department and submit it to the Graduate School when you apply for graduation. All approved program changes made during your course work must be indicated on this form.
Please remember, graduation is not automatic. You must apply to graduate whether or not you plan to participate in the ceremony. All graduate students who plan to graduate and participate in a ceremony must complete the following two-step process:
Step 1—Eligible students must complete an application to graduate. Log into Self-Service Banner (SSB) at my.bsu.edu and click on the "Student" tab, then click on "Student Records," and then "Apply to Graduate."
Step 2—Participants will need to order the necessary materials such as the cap, gown, and tassel. We ask that you get all your materials early in case something needs to be returned or exchanged.
Application forms also are available in the Graduate School office. All requests for applications for graduation and any questions or concerns should be directed to the Commencement Office, in Lucina Hall, room B4, phone: 765-285-1689.
If you have received a National Defense or Direct Student Loan, or a Nursing Student Loan from Ball State University, you must make an appointment for an exit interview in the financial aid office (Administration Building, room 201) prior to the completion of course requirements for your graduate degree. See the financial aid area for more information.
