FAQ - Virtual Private Network

What is a virtual private network (VPN)?
A virutal private network (VPN) is a network technology that creates a secure network connection over a public network such as the Internet or a private network owned by a service provider.

Do I need VPN for web browsing?
Generally VPN is not needed when you are using the wireless network because Web sites where confidential information is required should already be using a secure site (HTTPS).  VPN is required when using FTP, TELNET, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP which do not encrypt your confidential information (including your password) from possible attackers who may attempt to intercept your communications.

Will VPN protect me from phishing attempts?
Absolutely NOT. It is your responsibility to not give out your password. Nor does VPN protect you if the remote server is compromised.

How do I use VPN at Ball State?
Visit the VPN Web site to find out more information on VPN and download the software.
