Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) offers a variety of educational opportunities for every stage of the sponsored project life cycle. Whether you are one of our new "alpha" faculty or seasoned professional with an interest in extramural funding, we have a program to fit your needs.

Throughout the year, SPA staff hold workshops and informational sessions on a range of topics. To search for upcoming workshops and information sessions go here.

Previous workshops include:

  • Focus on the Search: Workshops designed to equip faculty to become sophisticated users of COS Pivot, Ball State’s primary funding opportunities database; offered on multiple dates throughout the academic year. Contact Jessie Roark, Research Information Coordinator, for more information.
  • SPA Clinics: By arrangement with the department chairs and college deans, SPA representatives visit various academic units to meet with individual faculty to address specific questions about their research or scholarly agendas, or the mechanics of the sponsored projects enterprise (idea development; funding opportunities; pre-award questions; post-award issues; and more).
  • SPA Colloquia Series: SPA is excited to announce a brand new Colloquia Series that will provide faculty with learning opportunities related to the external funding enterprise on campus. These discussions will be held twice per month during most months of the academic year.
  • Small Group Workshops: Faculty members may request a workshop tailored to their specific interests and needs, at a time, date, and location of their choosing. Contact Stanley Geidel, Program Manager, for more information.
  • Grants Essentials: In-college workshops sessions covering the basics of grantsmanship: Developing a Fundable Idea; Writing a Competitive Narrative; and Budget Development.
  • SPA Fellows: An intensive educational experience designed to develop the knowledge base and grant-writing skills of faculty members who display superior potential regarding the ability to obtain external funding in support of their research, scholarship, creative projects, and other fundable endeavors. The course is held annually and consists of monthly class meetings throughout the academic year. Participation is determined via a nomination process, with candidates brought forward by the Provost, Associate Vice President for Research, and the academic deans and department chairs, as well as SPA staff. Interested faculty members are also invited to self-nominate.
  • Research Week (11/16-11/20): A week-long professional development opportunity for faculty and staff with sessions dedicated to various aspects of proposal development, award, and compliance topics
  • Additional opportunities are being planned for this academic year - please keep an eye on the Ball State University Communication Center.
