Roger is a Professor of Higher Education, director of the Master of Arts in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education (a nationally ranked program), and works closely with faculty and students in the Adult, Higher, and Community Education doctoral program. In addition to serving as a faculty member, he has over 20 years experience in higher education in various roles including planning, research, and evaluation; orientation and new student programs, career center, admissions and enrollment planning, as an assistant to a vice chancellor for administration, and as a member of a board of trustees. Roger earned his Ph.D. and master’s degree in higher education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with a dissertation topic of “Profiles and Career Patterns of Private, Four-Year College Presidents.” He also graduated from Lee University and Tomlinson College with degrees in Biblical studies.

Roger’s teaching and research focuses on the academic and social integration of undergraduates, college student retention and persistence toward graduation, and evaluation and assessment of educational programs. His philosophical approach to teaching and mentoring is based on Sanford’s (1979) ideal mismatch between challenge and support and Astin’s (1985) commitment to student involvement in the learning process. As a teacher, he is committed to active learning, high expectations, multiple methods of delivery, and applied and innovative techniques. He has published more than 50 refereed or invited articles, presented at more than 85 professional conferences, mentored more than 125 doctoral and master’s students, and has received a major award/grant from the US Department of Education on mentoring students with disabilities. 

Roger is married to Rita, a speech pathologist at Wilson Middle School in the Muncie Community Schools, and has two daughters, Lindsey (Kokomo, Indiana) and Lauren (Cleveland, Tennessee). He enjoys playing tennis and racquetball, and four-wheeling at his cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
