Telecommunications
- Ball State students and faculty have won 39 Emmys and received 114 regional Emmy nominations. Our honors also include two gold Student Academy Awards.
- Sports Link, an immersive learning program that has produced content for Fox College Sports and NCAA March Madness Live, has won multiple Emmys and a 2011 College Sports Media Award.
- Ball State's student-run radio station, WCRD, received four silver Awards of Distinction from the International Academy of the Visual Arts at the 16th annual Communicator Awards ceremony in 2010.
- The movie Movers and Stakers: Stories along the Indiana National Road was named Platinum Winner in the Documentary Feature Category of the 2010 Creative Spirit Awards.
- 2011 marked the fifth time since 2000 that Ball State was named the Television School of the Year by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters (IASB).
- From their very first semester, students in the Department of Telecommunications receive hands-on experience with sophisticated audio and video equipment, including HD cameras.
Journalism
- Our student-run newspaper, The Ball State Daily News, received 80 Gold Circles in 2011 from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), including 19 first-place awards in the newspaper, video, and online categories.
- Several times, The Ball State Daily News has been named one of the best-designed student newspapers in the world by the Society for News Design.
- Ball Bearings, a student-run magazine and online publication, won a 2012 Online Pacemaker Award from Associated Collegiate Press and has been named a finalist in 2010 and 2011.
- Our journalism graphics program is one of the leading programs of its type in the country.
Advertising and Public Relations
- In 2012, Cardinal Communications, one of the nation’s first student-operated public relations and advertising agencies, was among about 30 student agencies in the country to be designated a National Affiliation Program with the Public Relations Student Society of America.
- Our master's degree in public relations is the first graduate program in the nation to receive Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR) by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Our undergraduate public relations program was also recertified in 2011 as one of only 22 nationally certified programs in the country.
- CommPro.biz listed our master’s program in public relations as one of its top 10 “up-and-comers” in 2011.
Communication Studies
- Our debate team has a stellar record. 2012 marked the fifth consecutive year it won the overall team championship title at the National Education Debate Association (NEDA) tournament. In 2011, two of the three All-American Debaters were Ball State students. In 2010, a Ball State debater was the first undergraduate student in the country to receive the President's Award, an honor typically given to coaches or teams.
- Our speech team placed third overall in team sweepstakes at the 2010 Novice National Tournament. In addition, the team has won the Indiana state championship tournament seven times since 2005.
