Destination: The World

In 2011, Ball State graduates secured Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships and spent the summer abroad.

Andrew Kern, ’11, a Spanish and sociology major from Bloomington, Indiana, dedicated his summer to teaching English in Colombia at the university level and volunteered with a service organization in his assigned community. He is a former Marine Corps infantry squad leader who served two tours of duty in Iraq and now plans a career in the Foreign Service or law enforcement. His career plans include the U.S. State Department, Department of Homeland Security, or federal law enforcement.

Lauren Petersen, ’11, an urban planning and development major from Bluffton, Indiana, taught in Poland, where she created a “community-based planning” group that explored environmental, urban planning and design, and neighborhood revitalization techniques. Her career plans focus on working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Petersen also served as a legislative intern with the Indiana General Assembly.
