Closed Courses and Petitioning
Sometimes students encounter the disappointment or frustration of not being allowed into a course because it is closed, meaning it has met the limit of seats. If this happens, students should take the initiative to keep checking the online information in Self-Service Banner. Select the "Look Up Classes" link to see continual current updates if someone has "dropped" the class and allowed a seat to be open again. In addition, some coures offer a Wait List option. Another option is to ask the instructor for permission to enroll into the closed course. This procedure is sometimes called "petitioning." Petitioning the teacher or department is sometimes successful, and is especially encouraged by advisors when the course is very important to making academic progress in a major or term.
