About Us

The Center for Media Design (CMD) at Ball State University is a campus-based facility advocating the development and application of digital media to advance education, community and business. We provide media thought leadership, ideation expertise and rigorous research and development capabilities across academic disciplines and industry sectors.

Established in 2003 through two consecutive $20 million Lilly Endowment awards, the CMD has established itself on campus as an interdisciplinary hub for digital media creation, investigation and application. It’s a place where forward-thinking students and faculty can connect with colleagues, community leaders and industry experts to address business and societal challenges using the best of digital media.

The CMD actively advances the use of digital media by:
1. Anticipating trends in new and emerging digital media and supporting assimilation into teaching, learning, research and practice.
2. Experimenting with cutting-edge concepts, designs, and devices for application in education, business and community.
3. Working with other key Ball State units to incubate new digital media initiatives.
4. Responding to digital media challenges by connecting diverse audiences to emerging media expertise and resources.
5. Applying emerging media solutions to empower under-served populations.
6. Supporting the advancement of Indiana’s digital technology and media economic sectors.
7. Defining best emerging media practices across disciplines and devices.
8. Connecting Center activities to Ball State’s Emerging Media Initiative, the Integrated Learning Institute and other relevant units.
The CMD’s research arm, Insight and Research, explores the complex and evolving relationship between consumers and media. As a pioneer in consumer-centric research, Insight and Research has earned a national reputation in industry and academia for revealing consumer behavior and attitudes around media consumption, usability, privacy and interactivity.

Many of Ball State’s most innovative learning experiences were established and fostered by the Center for Media Design. These include three Ball State immersive learning institutes – the Institute for Digital Entertainment and Education (IDEE), Institute for Digital Fabrication (IDF) and Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts (IDIA), the Digital Corps with the best and brightest emerging media student talent, and the multidisciplinary iMedia course, in which students design, develop and study interactive news and advertising for TV, mobile devices and tablets.

CMD’s success has directly contributed to the Emerging Media Initiative, Ball State’s $20 million investment to accelerate emerging media research, development, and commercialization.

In 2010, the Center for Media Design and its affiliated units were awarded the TechPoint Mira Award, a top honor in Indiana recognizing excellence in the delivery or use of technology to further learning and educational achievement in the state.
