Starting from 'Scrap': Kevin Klinger

Indiana's limestone industry has been immortalized in movies (Breaking Away), commemorated in books (Scott Russell Sanders' Stone Country) and contributed to some of the nation's most promineKlingerKevinnt and beloved structures (the Empire State Building, Washington National Cathedral). But today it faces increasing threats to its survival, not only from basic economic pressures but also growing environmental ones; like many manufacturing interests in the 21st century, it is being urged to move in more sustainable directions.

Enter Kevin Klinger, director of Ball State's Institute for Digital Fabrication, and a group of students, who recently gained real-life experience working with an in-state industry partner to develop "SmartScrap." Using digital scanning techniques and parametric design software to figure out how varied pieces can be combined, the system recycles limestone scraps from Indiana Limestone Fabricators into usable limestone that can be sold for profit. SmartScrap is not limited to limestone, either; it can be applied to many different forms of manufacturing waste, demonstrating how digital fabrication can solve many disposal vs. recycling issues.
